Favorite LA gallery/community space, art or otherwise?
I’ve seen some very good shows at Honor Fraser, David Kordansky, Matthew Marks, Sprüth Magers, and Richard Heller. There is some interesting stuff going on downtown right now, near the 6th street bridge construction. BBQLA and Venus over Manhatten (LA) have a good thing going. Plus, it’s so desolate down there, it’s an interesting vibe.
Best show you’ve seen recently?
I’m kind of curmudgeonly on most shows I go see. The Helen Frankenthaler show at Gagosian in Paris was really great. Also still thinking about the John McLauphlin show at LACMA and the Paul Seitsema show at Mathew Marks, both last year.
Artist you’re excited about?
We’re in a weird age where we are now exposed to more art on our phones than we are in person. It’s a good and bad thing - more exposure, less reality. I’ve found some artists recently via Instagram that I think are great. They aren’t “new” or anything, but new to me. Matt Connors and Nathalie du Pasquier are really brilliant. I’d love to see their work in person.
What music have you been listening too?
I’m probably a bit of an outlier here as I don’t steam music. Latest albums I bought were Com Truise “Iteration,” Sextile “Albeit Living,” Chain & the Gang “Best of Crime Rock,” Mac Demarco “This Old Dog,” and some back catalog from Conor Oberst and Iron and Wine. Also I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts and audio books while I paint. Been mainlining the Sam Harris podcast.
Any shows coming up?
I’m working on a new series of paintings and they do not have a home yet.
Chosen footwear of the moment.
I cycle between Vans, and New Balance lately, and occasionally Chucks.
